The dog threw up on the stairs, the kids' friend knocked over grape juice, and you have twenty minutes before you're supposed to be at a game at the Berry Center. This is the emergency carpet cleaning situation most Cypress households actually face. Nobody has an afternoon to spend on a stain.
What follows is the version that fits in the time you have.
The first five minutes decide everything
Speed matters more than product. A spill that's blotted within a few minutes usually comes out with plain water. The same spill an hour later has wicked into the backing and started bonding with the fiber.
Grab a clean white towel, press down hard, lift, move to a dry section, repeat. Keep going until the towel comes up nearly dry. For anything chunky, scrape it up with a spoon or a dull knife first. Work from the outside of the spot inward so you don't push it wider.
Do not rub. Do not use a colored towel. Do not use hot water on anything with protein or grease in it, because heat cooks it into the carpet. We've seen a red towel leave a bigger stain than the wine it was sent to clean up.
Three-minute treatments by spill type
Drinks (coffee, juice, wine, soda): after blotting, mist with cool water and blot again. If color remains, stir a little clear dish soap (a few drops, no more) into a cup of cool water, dab it on, then blot with plain water to rinse.
Grease and oil (butter, pizza, lotion): cover with baking soda or cornstarch, leave it while you deal with everything else, vacuum, then hit what's left with the soap mix.
Pet accidents: blot until nothing more comes up, then use an enzyme cleaner if you have one. Vinegar and water knocks down the smell temporarily. What you cannot do in three minutes is reach the pad, and urine goes to the pad. Mark the spot in your head. It'll be back on the next humid day if it isn't treated properly.
Mud (there's a lot of it here after a rain): let it dry completely, vacuum, then treat the remaining shadow with the soap mix. Wet mud smears. Dry mud lifts.
When the emergency is bigger than a towel
Some things need a professional the same day. A pet accident on carpet over a wood subfloor. A spill that covers more than a couple of square feet. Anything on wool or on an area rug with a dyed backing. A stain you've already tried two products on that's now bigger than when you started. That last one is the most common call we get, and we'd like to get it before the second product goes on; each attempt sets a little more of the stain.

Build the kit tonight
The habits are boring and they work: mats inside every door, a washable rug under the dining table and under the pet bowls, the traffic lanes vacuumed twice a week (carpet that's already full of grit soaks up spills faster and releases them slower), the dog on a consistent potty schedule. Not glamorous, but it cuts way down on the 9 p.m. panic.
Then put a shoebox together and keep it where the spills happen, which is the family room, not under the kitchen sink. In it: white cotton rags, a spray bottle filled with plain water, clear dish soap in a small bottle, baking soda, white vinegar, an enzyme cleaner if there's a pet in the house, and a pair of disposable gloves. A handheld vacuum on top if you have one. Label the box so nobody borrows the rags for the car.
