If you can't remember the last time your carpet was professionally cleaned, that's your answer: it's time. For everyone else, the schedule depends on who lives in the house and what walks across the floor.
The baseline is once a year for a home with no pets and moderate traffic. That's also what most carpet manufacturers put in the warranty terms, and some will void coverage if you can't show a receipt. Every six months for homes with dogs, cats, small kids, or a lot of guests. More often than that only if there's a specific problem, like a pet that's still learning or someone with bad allergies.
Traffic
The single biggest factor. Two adults who work all day put very little on a carpet. A family with three kids, a dog, and a house that's the neighborhood hangout after Cy-Fair football games puts a year's worth of soil down in a season. Look at the hallway between the garage and the kitchen: if there's a visible lane that's darker than the carpet under the furniture, you're past due. Fiber
Synthetic carpet (nylon, polyester, olefin) resists staining and bounces back well, so it can stretch to the yearly schedule. Wool and other natural fibers hold onto soil and are more prone to stains setting permanently, so they need attention more often, and they need a cleaner who has handled wool before.
Where you live
Climate matters, and Cypress is a tougher environment than the national advice assumes. The Gulf Coast humidity keeps carpet slightly damp for months at a time, which lets dust mites and mildew thrive in the pile. The pollen season runs nearly year-round here: cedar through the winter, then grass, then ragweed into the fall. Renting
Landlords usually clean between tenants. If you're a tenant, spills you leave behind become deductions at move-out, so a mid-lease professional cleaning is often cheaper than the charge at the end.
What happens if you wait
Soil works down into the pile and starts cutting fibers every time someone walks on it, which is why neglected carpet goes flat and dull in the traffic lanes long before it wears out anywhere else. Neglected carpet can lose half its life. Then there's what you breathe: dust mites, pet dander, pollen, mold spores, and bacteria all collect in carpet, and a vacuum only pulls out what's near the surface. If someone in the house has asthma or sinus trouble that gets worse indoors, the carpet is a likely suspect. We can't tell you it's the cause. Between professional cleanings
Vacuum at least once a week, twice in traffic lanes and pet areas. Slow passes pull more than fast ones.
Blot spills the minute they happen. White cloth, cool water, press, don't rub. Scrubbing spreads the spot and frays the fiber.
Mats at the doors you use, and think about a shoes-off rule, at least for the muddy months.
Don't walk on damp carpet. Soil grinds into wet fibers and sets.
Skip the rental machine. It over-wets, leaves detergent behind, and the carpet re-soils faster than before.
The cleaning method changes the schedule too
More than people expect. A shampoo or a poorly rinsed steam cleaning leaves residue in the carpet, and that residue attracts dirt, so the carpet looks bad again in a few months and you're cleaning more often.
